Group 8: The Castro’s at Fort York Food Bank
Topic: Food Security
Our story takes place at the Fort York Food bank, which is a food program that provides three-day supply of groceries to low-income individuals and families within the Toronto Central Area. A single mother and her daughter have just arrived to Canada from Colombia a few months ago. They are receiving welfare benefits and therefore, they do not have enough money to pay for food. As a result, they decide to go to Fort York Food bank for food assistance. They get registered by the volunteer counsellor at the food bank who interviews them to listen to their store and to explore their food needs. After the interview, mother and daughter are directed to the food distribution section of the food bank to acquire their first grocery bag from the hands of a volunteer who assist them with their first time food bank experience.
